Greetings from the East,
As we continue to finish the recovery from the restrictive years of Covid, let us continue to join in harmony to build a better tomorrow. ~ Old West Master, 2023
Dear Brethren,
Just as the Grand Lodge of England traces its origins to June of 1717, our nation finds its beginnings in July of 1776. This connection is far from coincidental. The weighty monarchy in England had suppressed free thought and individuality, prompting the establishment of Freemasonry as a means to advocate for equality among all people. Similarly, the United States of America emerged with a parallel purpose. July carries a profound significance for both our country and our lodge. We maintain a time-honored tradition of active participation, joined by our families, youth groups, and Appendant Masonic bodies, in the vibrant Santa Clarita July 4th parade – renowned as one of the finest in the state. Post-parade, we proudly host an annual BBQ, extending invitations to the leaders of the York Rite, the Grand Master of Masons in California, and our extended circle of family and friends. This year's event was exceptional in every sense. In the wake of the pandemic's gradual wane, we reinstated cherished traditions while integrating new safety measures into our transportation arrangements and expanding outdoor areas for greater accommodation. Our food service was streamlined, resulting in a resplendent affair.
Moreover, the month of July encompassed an enlightening presentation from the Masonic Homes and Outreach Services, as well as the initiation of a new Entered Apprentice Robert Aguilar son of Old West Brother George Aguilar and we passed Brother Daniel Boits, Jr. to the degree of Fellowcraft.
August is poised to unfold with a series of remarkable occasions. Foremost among them is the highly anticipated Golden Veteran Award ceremony, an honor which will bestowed upon our esteemed Most Worshipful Larry Adamson. This noteworthy event will take place at the Shriners Medical Center for Children, adding a touch of prestige to the month. Due to limited space, reservations are by invitation only. Additionally, we eagerly anticipate the elevation of Brother Ian Garcia to the sublime degree of Master Mason, a significant milestone in his Masonic journey. Also, we are set to initiate Mr. Jermaine Soto as an Entered Apprentice, marking the commencement of his path within our revered fraternity.
Lastly, mark your calendars for the September 5th Stated Dinner, a date not to be missed. The highlight of the evening will be a captivating historical play titled "This is Your Life George Washington." This engaging reenactment draws inspiration from the format of the "This Is Your Life" television show, featuring a cast of historical figures to bring an element of enjoyment and education to the proceedings.
Let us continue to work together in harmony towards a brighter future for our lodge and our community.
Fraternally yours,
Michael Schneider, PM

Dear Brethren,
Freemasonry Explained
As the Senior Warden, one of my key responsibilities is to supervise the progression of our members to higher degrees within Freemasonry. I often come across new Masons who have inquiries about our organization. To provide them with clarity, I conducted a little research and compiled a list of 10 essential points to explain Freemasonry.
Freemasonry is a fraternal organization that traces its origins back to the late 16th and early 17th centuries. It is based on the principles of brotherhood, moral and ethical development, charity, and mutual support. Freemasonry is not a religion, but rather a system of moral teachings, symbolism, and rituals, often using the tools and practices of the stonemason craft as metaphors for personal growth.
Here are ten key points to help explain Freemasonry:
It is essential to note that Freemasonry has a long and complex history, and the practices and beliefs can vary between different Masonic jurisdictions and lodges. It is a private organization, and its inner workings are generally known only to its members. Freemasons themselves often emphasize that the primary aim of their organization is to promote moral and ethical values, brotherhood, and charitable endeavors.
Thank you for your attention, and may your journey through Freemasonry be a pillar of strength.
Fraternally,
Conrad Watson
Senior Warden

Dear Brothers and Old West Lodge Family,
First, Let me start this article by honoring and to greet a congratulations to our Past Grand Master Most Worshipful Larry Adamson on receiving the prestigious Golden Veterans Awards! Your dedication and service are truly commendable. And wishing you a fantastic birthday filled with joy and happiness. May this special day be a reflection of the remarkable impact you’ve made in the Masonic Community.
Secondly, this summer, a season characterized by warmth, growth and vibrant energy, and our lodge embraces the spirit of togetherness and unity. We encourage our members to partake in the joys of summer, connecting with one another and with our local community. Whether it’s organizing outdoor gatherings, encouraging in volunteer work, or supporting local events, we seek to spread the light of Freemasonry and embody our core values in action. Summer serves as a reminder that amidst the busyness of life, we should pause, appreciate the beauty around us, and strengthen the bonds of fellowship that make our Lodge a beacon of light in the community.
Lastly, August will also see the continuation of our regular ritual work, including the exemplification of Masonic degrees. These ceremonies hold great significance in the Masonic tradition, imparting valuable lessons, and teachings to candidate while reinforcing the principles that guide our fraternity. I encourage our brothers to participate actively in these rituals, both to enrich their own Masonic journey and to support our fellow brothers.
Congratulations to our new EAs , Fellow Craft Masons and our new Master Masons.
Beauty in the South, together, we are the pillar of beauty!

A Special Lodge Presentation coming to our September 5th, 2023 Stated Dinner
Recalling the television classic "This is Your Life," and its radio predecessor, we are taken back to an era when the premise involved introducing a renowned celebrity and pleasantly surprising them with guests from their past. These guests would share personal stories, weaving together a tapestry of their life's history. In a captivating twist, Sean Foran, PGHP (Past Grand High Priest of Royal Arch Masons of California) the Curator of the Masonic-related museum Grace Dee May, has artfully curated a comparable presentation for the life of Brother George Washington. Assisted by other prominent figures from history, this extraordinary presentation promises to bring to life the remarkable journey of Brother George Washington.

What is a Lewis ?
Stonemasonry
In stonemasonry, the Lewis is an iron cramp that is forced into a cavity of a stone to enable the lifting or lowering of that stone. A shackle is attached, and the block is hoisted by hook, rope and pulley. By this means, the block is gripped securely. Once set in its place in the structure, the lewis is removed leaving the upper surface smooth with no clamp or chains on the outside to interfere with the laying of the next course. Our ancient operative brethren used this tool as early as the Roman era. Stones with the mortised cavity for the insertion of a lewis have been found in Hadrian’s Wall (built c. 121-127 CE).
Archaeologists have found further evidence of its use by the Saxons in England in buildings constructed in the 7th century.
Symbol
Although it is not referred to as working tool used in Masonic ritual it can be seen as a symbol of strength, which a son is to his father. Under some Masonic Constitutions "lewises" are granted privileges such as in Scotland where the son of a Master Mason can be initiated at the age of eighteen rather than twenty-one. In England the privilege extended to a "lewis", is that he takes precedence if he is one of two candidates at initiation.
History
The Prince of Wales, Frederick Louis (sometimes written as Lewis), had been made a Freemason in the previous year on 5 November 1737. His son, who would reign as King George III, was born on 4 June 1738 amid general rejoicing. Three of his other sons, The Dukes of York, Gloucester, and Cumberland would follow their father into freemasonry. Masonic historians conclude that the term came into use in the 18th century. The Lecture in the Second Degree published by William Preston in the 1780s contains a lengthy discourse on the Lewis.
In our context, a Lewis refers to the son of a Mason who follows in his father's footsteps to become a Mason, particularly within the same lodge.
Are you considered a Lewis? Will your son or grandson carry on the tradition and become a Lewis as well?

Brother B.J. Tanjutco, serving as the Junior Warden of San Fernando Lodge No. 343, has consistently lent his support to Old West Lodge during our degree ceremonies, especially excelling in the delivery of the 1st Degree Lecture. Notably, on the evening of June 17, a Saturday, he played a pivotal role by delivering the 1st Degree Lecture two times in the same evening for four candidates during a single session. His delivery was both precise and engaging, a testament to his unwavering commitment and dedication.
His exceptional ritual performance, coupled with his steadfast devotion, has made a significant and positive impact on OUR lodge. It is with great confidence that we recognize Brother B.J. Tanjutco as a truly deserving candidate for the distinguished Lion of the Lodge Award.

The legend of the lion's rebirth was prominent in Medieval symbology, where it was founded on the belief that a lion cub was born stillborn but could only be revived by the roaring of its sire. This belief gave rise to the lion becoming a symbol of rebirth and regeneration.
In Freemasonry, the lion's rebirth is often used as a symbol of reformation and refreshment. The lion represents strength and courage, while its rebirth represents the transformation and renewal of the individual.
For our purposes, the Master's Pin of Lion of the Lodge, can be viewed as a symbol for one that serves to lift up the lodge to make it better than it was before his action.
The Master intends to bestow this pin only once to each Brother, with the hope that as many Brothers as possible will receive it. Imagine the joy of seeing every Brother proudly wearing this pin, recognizing that each of us can make a positive impact.

Having previously served two terms as the Master of the Lodge, Junior Warden Ron Gutierrez, PM, made the gracious decision to return to the Officer line this year, assuming the role of Junior Warden. Demonstrating his selflessness, he also allowed Senior Deacon, PM Fred Cabatan, to take on the position of Junior Warden, mid-year. Ron not only filled in as Senior Deacon, to allow this to happen, but also embraced various other ritual responsibilities.
In addition to building upon his already impressive ritual expertise, Ron showcased an exquisite singing voice during the perambulations at our recent ceremonies, adding an enchanting dimension to our rituals. This elevation of our ritual experience was truly delightful and refreshing.
Furthermore, Ron has been dedicated to fostering positive relationships with neighboring lodges, particularly with San Fernando Lodge, No. 343, encouraging their involvement in our ritual team whenever needed.
Through his compassion and unwavering dedication, Ron Gutierrez truly merits the Lion of the Lodge award. His contributions have significantly elevated the lodge's atmosphere, and his impact continues to resonate.

Brother George Aguilar, a military veteran, and past leader of various other Community organizations, has been a member of Old West Lodge for almost 18 years. He was raised by our current Secretary, Bob Flinn, PM who was Master of the Lodge at the time. Although no longer living geographically close enough to Old West Lodge to attend regularly, he has consistently conducted himself in a manner that served as an example to his son Robert. Robert was inspired by his father's example of adhering to the moral principles of Freemasonry and constantly striving to become a better person, When Robert knocked at the door of Freemasonry by asking his father for an application to become a member of our lodge, Brother George ensured that the door of Freemasonry was opened unto him. Brother George visited the lodge with his son Robert and introduced him to the Brothers reminding us that we had seen Robert several times over the years. Brother George, also attended and played an active role, in his son's initiation. Robert was initiated in July making him a Lewis or son of a Mason becoming a Mason.
In light of his exceptional example and profound impact, to the community and his family, it is our honor to recognize Brother George Aguilar with the esteemed Lion of the Lodge Award.

A Full Float of Old West Family and Friends was proudly exhibited during the annual Santa Clarita July 4th parade.
Brother Michael Cain, was awarded the Masonic Golden Veteran Award, for over 50 years of service as a Master Mason. His family was present, and by his choice we dressed in casual attire. The Inspector Worshipful John Schuster, was the presiding Officer.
Ms. Esperanza Esparza, MOS Care Manager from the Masonic Homes Outreach services gave a presentation at our Stated Dinner in July explaining the many services available to the Brethren and their families. She can be reached at eesparza@mhccov.org for further questions.
Thanks to amazing efforts of Brother Michael Hill, Hand to the Master, his lovely wife Peggy Hill and Laura Kelley and many other helping hands, the decorations, tables, and food was ready when the parade arrived at Old West Lodge.
From left to right:
Regrettably, it is with a heavy heart that we share the news of the passing of Widow Norma Shannon shortly after July 4th. For further information regarding the upcoming ceremony, kindly refer to the Eastern Star report. The ceremony is scheduled to take place on Thursday, August 10 at 7:30 PM.
Looking ahead to the autumn season, we are in the process of organizing a presentation of the Widow's pin for Barbara Schnepp. Barbara is currently on a visit to her grandchildren.
In the near future, I am considering the idea of hosting a "Widow's Luncheon," potentially during the fall months. Your assistance in this endeavor would be greatly appreciated.
With utmost respect, Doug Kelley Widow Liaison
Eastern Star Report
Greetings to all,
With deep sorrow, we share the news that our esteemed Worthy Matron, Norma Shannon, passed away shortly after July 4th. A heartwarming Celebration of Life was held on July 12th in her honor. As a tribute to her memory, an Eastern Star funeral service is scheduled for Thursday, August 10. Following a brief meeting, the lodge will open its doors to all. During this event, the Eastern Star will conduct the service, and the Jobs Daughters, including many of Norma's granddaughters, will perform a moving formation while signing and singing "Nearer My God To Thee." Furthermore, my wife Laura, who served as Associate Matron, will take her place at the East.
Mark your calendars for the Block Party on Thursday, August 3. It's a fantastic occasion and entry is FREE! Detailed information can be found on the accompanying flyer or by reaching out to me directly. Anticipate an abundance of food, games, and exciting prizes to make the evening memorable.
Our dedicated Eastern Star ladies have conceived a series of engaging "after dinner" events. On alternate months, during the Stated Meeting dinner while the gentlemen are engaged in Lodge activities, they will host enlightening discussions and classes. The next installment is planned for August 1 during the Stated Meeting. My wife Laura will be presenting a captivating card-making demonstration.
Our ongoing initiative to craft blankets for Project Linus and the Young Survivors Coalition continues to flourish. These projects are wonderfully straightforward, requiring no particular skills – even a Past Master like me can participate! We extend a warm invitation to our upcoming "party" on Thursday, August 17, from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Feel free to drop in at your convenience and depart when necessary. We welcome anyone and everyone who wishes to contribute.
Let's not forget that Eastern Star is an organization open to MASONS and their wives, as well as other female relatives. We warmly welcome more men to join Eastern Star – it's not a requirement to join alongside your spouse. Feel free to approach me at any time for further discussions.
Sincerely,
Doug Kelley (Worthy Patron)

Dear DeMolay Members and Supporters,
Old West is meeting, but we could use help. We had good turnout for the July 4th parade, assisted by several of the parents. AND we got Brother Kevin McHorney's son initiated into our Chapter. We ALWAYS need new members!
We weren't able to do our "Fun Event" as planned, but hoping to set up the next one - a "video game night". To do this, we are going to cook and serve dinner at the August 1 Stated Meeting and use the money gained to fund a video game truck.
We have started a "pizza and proficencys" on fourth Fridays, where the young men can memorize their obligations (like the Masons have to). And of course we're bribing them with pizza.
Old West DeMolay is struggling. We meet on the second and fourth Fridays of each month, but we need more active advisors, and we have just a few members.
We really need YOU to step up and help find new members for our chapter, as well as volunteering to become an Demolay ADvisor ("DAD" - but "Mom"s are welcome too!)
Let us work together to breathe new life into Old West
DeMolay.
Warm regards,
Doug Kelley (Advisor)
