Greetings from the East,
As we continue to finish the recovery from the restrictive years of Covid, let us continue to join in harmony to build a better tomorrow. ~ Old West Master, 2023
Dear Fellow Masons & Family,
This past September was a vibrant month, teeming with events that celebrated our patriotic and Masonic heritage. We participated in a dynamic historical drama, spotlighting notable Masons like George Washington, Patrick Henry, and Paul Revere, along with historical figures such as Betsy Ross. Additionally, the Pasadena Scottish Rite enhanced our sense of patriotism by performing the Living Constitution.
Our ongoing fundraiser, the Cynthia and James Cunningham Eggs Benedict Breakfast, saw robust attendance, including two Past Grand Masters. The lodge has also undergone improvements with the completion of our new lighting system.
The Shrine Ceremonial event was an unequivocal success. Seven brothers from our Old West Lodge contributed to the occasion. Furthermore, our presence was strongly felt at the Dodgers Masons4Mitts game, with many Masons attending alongside their families.
A special highlight was the initiation of the Double Double ceremony, featuring two 2nd-degree passings for Brothers Steve Hill and Frank Sanchez. To mark the occasion, all attendees were treated to an In-N-Out Double Double burger, making for a memorable experience.
As we look toward October and the approaching end of the Old West Masonic year, please be assured that your pillar officers will represent our lodge well at the Grand Lodge Annual Communication in San Francisco. We are optimistic about our incoming members, with several prospective Masons and applications in the pipeline, as well as brothers prepared for their proficiencies. Our officers are diligently preparing for their future roles and are set to be qualified and highly capable.
In a similar vein, Past Master Bret Hart of the Lancaster Lodge will serve as the new Inspector for the 701st District next year. His credentials and recommendations are strong.
In closing, I am thrilled to announce that Ron Gutierrez, PM has been unanimously chosen by the Hiram Award Selection Committee as our Hiram Award recipient for 2023. The celebration is scheduled for our December Stated Meeting. Well done, Worshipful Ron! You've truly earned it.
Let us continue to work together in harmony towards a brighter future for our lodge and our community.
Fraternally yours,
Michael Schneider, PM

Greetings Brethren from the West,
Brethren, this month I’d like to give you some thoughts on one of our principle tenants, Brotherly Love. Brotherly love within the Masonic fraternity is about fostering a sense of unity, support, and respect among members, both within the Lodge and in their interactions with the broader community.
Below are a few ways you can demonstrate and express this core principle of Freemasonry both in and out of the lodge.
1. Support and Encouragement: Masons should offer support and encouragement to their fellow members in both their Masonic and personal endeavors. This can include mentoring, listening, and providing assistance when needed.
2. Charity and Service:
Masons often engage in charitable activities and community service. By contributing time, resources, and effort to help those in need, they exemplify the concept of brotherly love.
3. Respect and Tolerance:
Masons are expected to show respect and tolerance towards the diverse backgrounds, beliefs, and opinions of their fellow members. Respecting differences fosters a sense of unity.
4. Brotherhood Bonds:
Building strong bonds of friendship and camaraderie within the Masonic brotherhood is a fundamental way to express brotherly love. This involves spending quality time together and building meaningful relationships.
5. Moral and Ethical Guidance:
Masons can offer moral and ethical guidance to their brethren when faced with challenges or dilemmas, promoting personal growth and self-improvement.
6. Secrecy and Trust:
Masons are known for their commitment to secrecy regarding certain aspects of their rituals. This commitment to trust and discretion among members is another way of showing brotherly love.
7. Education and Enlightenment: Sharing knowledge and wisdom with fellow Masons through educational programs and discussions can promote intellectual growth and mutual understanding.
8. Inclusivity:
Embracing new members with warmth and inclusivity helps them feel welcome and part of the Masonic brotherhood, reinforcing the principle of brotherly love.
9. Conflict Resolution:
Handling conflicts or disagreements within the organization with a spirit of reconciliation and fairness demonstrates a commitment to harmony and unity.
10. Personal Development:
Encouraging each other’s personal growth and self-improvement is a form of brotherly love. Masons can inspire and motivate their brethren to strive for their best.
Thank you for your attention, and may your journey through Freemasonry be a pillar of strength.
Fraternally,
Conrad Watson

Dear Brothers and Old West Lodge family
As the golden hues of autumn begin to paint the landscape and leaves gracefully descend from the trees, we, as Freemasons, have a profound reason to rejoice. October arrives with the promise of new beginnings and celebrations. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to our newly initiated Entered apprentices, Fellow Craft brothers and Master Masons, welcoming them into a deeper understanding of our craft's symbolism and teachings.
The Fellow Craft degree represents a significant step in a Mason's journey. It symbolizes the pursuit of knowledge, wisdom, and enlightenment. Just as the Fellow Craft works with the rough ashlar to shape it into a perfect stone, we strive to refine ourselves through education and self-improvement.
In October, we recognize the dedication and commitment of our Fellow Craft brothers who have embarked on this enlightening journey. Their thirst for knowledge and their willingness to delve deeper into Masonic principles are commendable. We encourage them to continue their quest for light and wisdom, embracing the valuable lessons embedded within this degree.
Another hallmark of October in the Masonic calendar is the annual communication of the Grand Lodge of California. It is an event that brings together Masons from all corners of the state, uniting us in brotherhood and shared purpose. It's a time to deliberate on matters of significance, celebrate achievements, and chart the course for the future.
Experience the Beauty and Solemnity!
For our brothers who have not yet had the opportunity to attend the Grand Lodge Annual Communication, we extend an invitation. It's an occasion like no other, where the beauty and solemnity of our honorable fraternity are on full display. The grandeur of the proceedings, the wisdom shared, and the camaraderie fostered are experiences that every Mason should cherish.
**Conclusion**
As we enter this month of October, let us celebrate the growth of our new brothers and the rich traditions of our fraternity. Let us embrace the opportunity to attend the Grand Lodge Annual Communication, where the spirit of Freemasonry shines brightly.
May this month be a reminder of the Masonic values we hold dear: knowledge, brotherhood, and the pursuit of a more enlightened self. Congratulations to our Fellow Craft brothers, and may your journey be one of continual growth and understanding.
In the South, we stand unified, representing the very essence of the pillar of beauty!
Sincerely and fraternally,
From the South Bro Ron Gutierrez , PM

Brother Steve Hill and Brother Frank Sanchez were both passed to the Fellowcraft Degree on the same night. Consequently, we began referring to the occasion as a "Double-Double Degree."
Past Master Doug Kelley embraced the concept, and thus a new tradition was born: Double-Double Hamburgers to celebrate Double-Double degrees.
The Presentation was acted/read by our lodge family members and included several historical Masonic figures including, Patrick Henry, Paul Revere and by extension Betsy Ross to name a few.
Past Grand High Priest of Royal Arch Masons of California, and Curator for the Grace Dee May Museum (Masonic related Museum containing and explaining much of Los Angeles history), Sean Foran presents a historic plaque to Old West Lodge.
And then there was light.... all of the fluorescent tube lights in the lodge room have now been replaced by leds using less energy and providing more light. Thanks to many hands of our lodge family.
A free spaghetti dinner and play were presented by the Pasadena Scottish Rite. Several Junior High School youth were in attendance and received extra credit from their teachers for the programs educational value.
Every year Cynthia and James Cunningham would host an Eggs Benedict fundraiser for the Jobs Daughters. Although they have both passed on their Memory and Spirit live on.
Most Worshipful Larry Adamson pictured left and Most Worshipful Art Weiss picture right top were both on hand to support our youth and enjoy a good breakfast.

Although Scott Oglesby may come across as reserved and unassuming at first glance, those who get to know him discover an incredible individual and Masonic Brother. Passionate about research, Scott has delved deep into the literature of Freemasonry, evidenced by the numerous books he's read on the subject. Holding a 32nd degree in the Scottish Rite, he's also a former High Priest of the Royal Arch in the York Rite Masonry. Born into Masonic tradition as a Lewis, or the son of a Mason, Scott recently took on the role of Marshall in the Officer line and has already committed to serving in an official capacity for the upcoming year. Additionally, the lodge now boasts a Smart TV in its dining hall, thanks to Scott's generous donation and the installation expertise of Brother Michael Hill. This new addition enables us to stream Masonic educational content, enjoy sports games, or even watch movies. For his invaluable contributions to uplifting our lodge, Scott is truly deserving of the Master's Lion of the Lodge award.
The Lion has long been a symbol of strength and sovereignty, of courage and bravery, and of agility and dignity.

The Lion has long been a symbol of strength and sovereignty, of courage and bravery, and of agility and dignity.
The legend of the lion's rebirth was prominent in Medieval symbology, where it was founded on the belief that a lion cub was born stillborn but could only be revived by the roaring of its sire. This belief gave rise to the lion becoming a symbol of rebirth and regeneration.
In Freemasonry, the lion's rebirth is often used as a symbol of reformation and refreshment. The lion represents strength and courage, while its rebirth represents the transformation and renewal of the individual.
For our purposes, the Master's Pin of Lion of the Lodge, can be viewed as a symbol for one that serves to lift up the lodge to make it better than it was before his action.
The Master intends to bestow this pin only once to each Brother, with the hope that as many Brothers as possible will receive it. Imagine the joy of seeing every Brother proudly wearing this pin, recognizing that each of us can make a positive impact.
Thanks to Brothers Scott Oglesby, Marshall and Brother Michael Hill, Hand to the Master, Old West Lodge has joined the New West with a Smart TV in the Dining Room.
Pictured in the center is Old West Brother, Lynn Georgeson, Past Potentate of the Shrine, Past President of the Silver Mounted Horse Patrol that has been in the Rose Parade. the others you might easily recognize. Brother Andy Grim was there too.
Each year the Grand Lodge coordinates a charity to raise money and athletic ability for youth. Old West was there with their families.

Eastern Star Report
Greetings to all,
My wife Laura, who was Associate Matron, has been elected and installed to fill the remainder of Norma's term. Norma may be gone but she will never be forgotten.
On a happier note, thank you to all those that attended our first-ever "Block Party" on August 3! I think we had a lot of fun! We are planning more fun activities for the future.
Our project to make blankets for Project Linus and Young Survivors Coalition is continuing. These are really simple, no skills required - even a Past Master (me) can do them! Please check out our flyer. Our next "party" is Saturday October 7 from Noon to 6:00PM. Drop in anytime, leave when you have to. Anyone and everyone is invited to help.
Speaking of October 7, I hope you'll support our Alheimer's Walk, supporting the Alzheimer's Association, which is this year's state charity. The walk is at Bridgeport Park at 8AM, and I'd really like you to be part of the team. If you can't be there, you can still donate to the team. See the flyer. Our team link is:
https://act.alz.org/site/TR?team_id=801292&fr_id=16400&pg=team
Thank you to those that attended our "dine-out" at Hook Burger! Our next dine out will be at Tomato Joe's Pizza on Golden Valley, this will be on Wednesday November 15. Take a break and get some pizza before the Thankgiving turkey! Come on out, have some food, socialize, AND help out a concordant body!
Eastern Star is an organization for MASONS and their wives, and other female relations. We could certainly use more men in the Eastern Star (you do not need to join with your wife), please talk to me anytime.

Old West is meeting, but we could use help. We ALWAYS need new members! We just initiated a new member at our yearly Conclave over Labor Day, and we will be initiating another member sometime in October. But our Chapter is very small and we need more help.
Our Friday September 8 meeting with firearm safety was very well attended - we had some Lodge Leadership show up and participate. Thanks to all who attended. We plan to have a day at a shooting range soon.
Our next fun event will be the annual Shrine Halloween Dance at the Shrine Expo hall. Friday October 20, 6:00PM - 10:00PM. If you want to bring your teen or pre-teen (10+, boys and girls welcome!), its FREE and well-chaperoned.
We are still planning a fun event - a "video game night" with a special Video Game truck. Thank you to all who showed up at the August 1 Stated Meeting and donated to the cause!
We have started a "pizza and proficencys" on fourth Fridays, where the young men can memorize their obligations (like the Masons have to). And of course we're bribing them with pizza.
Old West DeMolay is struggling. We meet on the second and fourth Fridays of each month, but we need more active advisors, and we have just a few members. We really need YOU to step up and help find new members for our chapter, as well as volunteering to become an Demolay ADvisor ("DAD" - but "Mom"s are welcome too!)
