AFTER DINNER AMUSEMENTS
Have you recently found yourself contemplating the idea of attending a Stated Meeting to witness the camaraderie among the brethren and observe the new developments unfolding within the lodge? However, you may have also wished to include your wife, partner, relative, or friend in this experience. Well, now you can! In collaboration with the Order of the Eastern Star, and spearheaded by Laura Kelley, the Lodge has arranged a series of engaging activities that will take place in the dining hall while the brethren convene in the lodge. These activities, dubbed "After Dinner Amusements," provide an opportunity for all to partake. We invite everyone to join us and embrace this delightful addition to our lodge gatherings. Please refer to the schedule later in this Trestleboard for a detailed outline of the upcoming events throughout the year.
CHALLENGE COINS
Brother Daniel Boits, Jr., a distinguished former Army Officer, esteemed defense contractor, and recent addition to Old West Lodge, has graciously taken on the responsibility of spearheading a committee. The committee's mission is to conceive and distribute unique challenge coins for our lodge, drawing inspiration from the ones he has received during his military service, including a notable one from General Petraeus. If you wish to contribute to this honorable initiative, kindly reach out to Brother Daniel Boits, Jr. directly via email at djboits2002@gmail.com .
PAST MASTER PICTURES
We are grateful to Peggy Hill, with the oversight of the Building Association, and Secretary Bob Flinn, PM, for their dedicated efforts in updating the Past Masters Pictures. This undertaking involves incorporating black ribbons to honor those who have passed away and including additional photographs of Past Masters who are not yet represented on our walls. Their commitment ensures that our tribute to the esteemed Past Masters remains current and meaningful.
TELEVISION
Brother Scott Oglesby has generously donated a flat-screen television to the Lodge. We are thrilled to announce that our goal is to have it fully functional in time for the July 4th BBQ event. This television will serve as a valuable asset, allowing our guests to stream the recorded parade and enhancing our Masonic education activities. We extend our heartfelt appreciation to Brother Scott Oglesby for his thoughtful contribution.
LODGE SHIRTS
Worshipful Rick Leiphardt is currently engaged in researching the procurement of lodge shirts alongside a fellow retired police officer. Their aim is to finalize the order and have the shirts ready by the 4th of July. This collaborative effort reflects their dedication and commitment to ensuring that our brethren have the opportunity to proudly showcase their lodge affiliation.
MUSIC
We are delighted to announce that Brother David Lalimar has been appointed as the Organist within our Officer line. Since assuming this role, he has already brought a vibrant energy to our meetings through his exceptional musical accompaniment. We are grateful for Brother David's talent and dedication, which enhance the overall experience of our lodge gatherings.
WIDOW PINS
In recognition of her significant contributions and as a tribute to Widow Mary Jo Handle, we will be presenting her with the new widows pin during the June Stated Dinner. This honorable presentation will be carried out by Doug Kelley, PM, the Chair of the Widows Committee. The newly designed widows pins are truly exquisite. As part of our ongoing efforts, we are diligently working to ensure that all widows have received their respective pins. If you would like to acquire one of these newer pins, please reach out to our dedicated Committee Chair for further assistance.
NEW BROTHERS
We are thrilled to share exciting news about our Masonic endeavors. Four esteemed Brothers, namely Mr. Stephen Hill, Dr. Scott Petri, Dr. Frank Sanchez, and Mr. Marco Vasquez, have been elected to receive the degrees of Masonry in our lodge. We have scheduled their initiation ceremony for Saturday, June 17, starting promptly at 4pm. This auspicious occasion marks the beginning of their Masonic journey, and we eagerly anticipate welcoming them into our esteemed fraternity.
NEW MASTER MASONS
We are pleased to announce two upcoming Masonic ceremonies in our lodge. On Tuesday, June 20, we will be raising Brother Alejandro Melendez, and on Tuesday, June 27, we will raise Brother Derek Wynn. These significant events mark important milestones in their Masonic journey, as they ascend to the rank of Master Masons. We also anticipate the raising of additional candidates as Master Masons in the coming month, further enriching our fraternity.
ATTIRE DURING SUMMER
During the summer months of July and August, we kindly encourage attendees to opt for business casual attire. We understand the need for comfort and adaptability in warm weather, while still maintaining a professional appearance. Embracing a business casual dress code allows us to strike a balance between formality and relaxation, ensuring a comfortable and suitable atmosphere for all.

MEMORIAL DAY PARADE
As part of our commitment to Public Awareness Month, we enthusiastically took part in the Friendly Valley Memorial Parade. The event was a delightful experience for everyone involved, with a procession that included Golf Carts, a Firetruck, Classic Cars, Boy Scouts, and representatives from Old West Lodge and Honor Queen Cathleen Kelley. The presence of our lodge in the parade was met with great appreciation by the enthusiastic bystanders. It is of utmost importance to us to cultivate a positive image of the lodge within our community. Actively promoting the impactful work carried out by our lodge and engaging with the community allows us to foster positive relationships and strengthen our ties with the broader community.
MEMORIAL SERVICE
In addition, we had the privilege of conducting the Memorial Service for Brother Robert Tallent at the Elks Lodge. This service served as a heartfelt tribute to Brother Tallent and offered an opportunity to honor his family while fostering connections within the community. It is worth noting that Brother Robert Tallent was the former owner of the iconic 76 Gas Station situated at the intersection of Interstate 5 and Lyons Ave. This landmark, with its distinctive tall tower crowned by an orange globe, held great significance for our community for many decades. By participating in the Memorial Service, we not only paid our respects to Brother Tallent but also upheld our commitment to maintaining strong relationships with our community and its cherished landmarks.
FIFTH TUESDAY BOWLING
Everyone was invited to join us for an enjoyable Tuesday night at Valencia Lanes. The presence of the Jobs Daughters was remarkable, as they made an impressive appearance. It was heartwarming to see many brothers and their families returning to witness the event. Notably, Brother Michael Hill, Hand of the Master, and his wonderful wife Peggy contributed to the evening's excitement by arranging awards for us average bowlers. We extend our gratitude to Worshipful Doug Kelley and his wife Laura for organizing a delightful spread of food, which was enjoyed by many spectators. The combined efforts of everyone involved made it a memorable annual event filled with camaraderie and entertainment.
LODGE NIGHT - EVERY TUESDAY
We maintain a regular schedule of practices, degrees, and proficiencies every Tuesday. The Master of the Lodge arrives promptly by 5pm to be accessible to anyone seeking consultation or guidance. Following that, the Master and other brethren are available to assist with proficiencies, and practice sessions commence at 7pm. We warmly invite you to attend the lodge and join as a sideliner, rediscovering the intricate work and rituals. It brings us great joy to share that several brethren have returned and are relishing in the renewed energy within our lodge. We eagerly anticipate the opportunity to see you and share in this revitalization together.
We encourage our Brothers to share their ideas for the lodge or contribute articles for our electronic Trestleboard, now renamed as Tales from the Trails. You may contact us directly if you have anything to share.
Let us continue to work together in harmony towards a brighter future for our lodge and our community.
Sincerely & Fraternally,
Michael Schneider, PM

Dear Brethren,
Freemasonry is a centuries-old fraternity that emphasizes moral and ethical principles through symbolic rituals and teachings. It is divided into three distinct degrees, each representing a stage of personal growth and knowledge. Today, we will explore these degrees and their significance within the Masonic tradition.
The first degree of Freemasonry is known as the Entered Apprentice. It serves as an initiation into the fraternity, marking the beginning of an individual's Masonic journey. During this degree, candidates learn the fundamental principles of Freemasonry, such as the importance of morality, brotherly love, and charity. Symbolically, the Entered Apprentice represents a person seeking light, knowledge, and self-improvement. It emphasizes the importance of introspection, self-discipline, and the pursuit of wisdom.
Moving on, the second degree is called the Fellowcraft. This degree represents a progression in one's understanding and commitment to the principles of Freemasonry. The Fellowcraft degree builds upon the foundation laid in the Entered Apprentice degree. It encourages individuals to delve deeper into the liberal arts and sciences, symbolizing the pursuit of intellectual growth and enlightenment. Freemasons at this stage explore concepts such as geometry, moral philosophy, and the importance of a well-rounded education. The Fellowcraft degree highlights the importance of knowledge and self-development as essential components of personal and societal advancement.
Finally, we come to the third degree, known as the Master Mason. This is considered the highest degree in Freemasonry and holds significant importance within the fraternity. The Master Mason degree symbolizes the attainment of wisdom, integrity, and leadership. It delves into profound philosophical and moral teachings, often drawing from biblical and mythical narratives. Candidates are encouraged to reflect upon their mortality, the importance of virtuous living, and the value of leaving a lasting legacy. The Master Mason degree emphasizes the principles of charity, truth, and justice, urging members to apply these virtues in their daily lives.
It is important to note that while the three degrees represent different stages of initiation and knowledge, Freemasonry is a lifelong journey of self-improvement. Each degree serves as a stepping stone towards a deeper understanding of oneself, humanity, and the world at large. Beyond the three degrees, Freemasonry offers numerous opportunities for members to engage in philanthropy, community service, and further intellectual pursuits.
In conclusion, the three degrees of Freemasonry, namely the Entered Apprentice, Fellowcraft, and Master Mason, provide a structured path for personal growth, self-reflection, and the development of moral and ethical values. They symbolize the progression from seeking light and knowledge to becoming a wise and virtuous individual. Through these degrees, Freemasonry aims to shape individuals who strive for excellence, uphold the principles of brotherly love, and contribute positively to society.
Thank you for your attention, and may your journey through the degrees of Freemasonry be enlightening and transformative.
Fraternally,
Conrad Watson

Dear Brothers and Members of the Lodge,
As Masons, we deeply understand the importance of recognizing and valuing every individual within our organization. Each member, as a volunteer, deserves to be treated with utmost respect. It is crucial that we acknowledge and celebrate the accomplishments of others, offering handshakes, smiles, and engaging in meaningful conversations that provide encouragement. Furthermore, we should take the time to express our appreciation through heartfelt notes. Our fellow brethren are not anonymous figures valued solely for their contributions; they are cherished friends, and we must strive to affirm the unique worth of each one. This affirmation is a testament that they truly belong.
Brethren, we are thrilled to announce that we have received new petitions and welcomed new members into our midst. The Lodge's renaissance continues as we embrace fresh faces. We are privileged to have exceptional candidates who have recently received their Masonic degrees. We extend our gratitude to the side liners who have offered moral support to these candidates.
Additionally, our officers and degree team have been doing exceptional work in ensuring the smooth progression of the ceremonies.
Please refer to the Lodge schedule for upcoming degrees and events.
Together, we are the pillar of strength!

Legends of the West: Celebrating Famous Freemasons
Introduction:
The Old West is known for its captivating tales of rugged pioneers, cowboys, outlaws, and lawmen. Amidst the chaos and adventure, a secret fraternity silently played its part in shaping the history of the American frontier. Freemasonry, with its core values of brotherhood, morality, and personal growth, attracted men from all walks of life, including some of the most iconic figures of the Old West. In this article, we pay homage to the famous Freemasons who left an indelible mark on the untamed landscapes of the West.
Colonel William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody:
One of the most iconic figures of the American West, Colonel William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody was not only a legendary showman but also a Freemason. Initiated in Platte Valley Lodge No. 32 in Nebraska in 1870, Cody embodied the spirit of Freemasonry through his philanthropy and commitment to community service. He exemplified the Masonic virtues of honor, integrity, and dedication, and his popular Wild West shows spread the values of courage and adventure to audiences worldwide.
Wyatt Earp:
Wyatt Earp, the legendary lawman of the Wild West, was also a member of the Masonic fraternity. Earp's participation in the brotherhood brought together the principles of justice and equality that were the foundation of his storied career. Known for his role in the infamous gunfight at the O.K. Corral, Earp demonstrated the ideals of Freemasonry in his unwavering pursuit of upholding the law and defending the innocent.
John Henry "Doc" Holliday:
Another iconic figure of the Old West, "Doc" Holliday was not only a notorious gambler and gunslinger but also a Freemason. Initiated in Atlanta Lodge No. 59 in Georgia, Holliday showcased the Masonic values of loyalty and compassion. Despite his reputation as a gunslinger, he was known to have a keen sense of justice and fiercely defended his friends and loved ones. His participation in Freemasonry underlined the complexity and depth of his character.
General Douglas MacArthur:
While not directly associated with the Wild West, General Douglas MacArthur is worth mentioning as an esteemed Freemason who left an indelible mark on American history. A military genius and a prominent figure in World War II, MacArthur's Masonic journey began in the Philippines where he became a member of Manila Lodge No. 1. Throughout his career, MacArthur exemplified the Masonic principles of discipline, leadership, and honor, making him an exemplary Freemason.
Conclusion:
The Old West has long captivated our imaginations, and behind the tales of gunfights and frontier justice lie the untold stories of the Freemasons who contributed to its legacy. From Buffalo Bill Cody and Wyatt Earp to "Doc" Holliday and General Douglas MacArthur, these famous Freemasons embraced the principles of brotherhood, morality, and personal growth in their respective pursuits. Their influence on the development and shaping of the American West cannot be understated. As Freemasons, they stood for the virtues that continue to inspire men and women today, reminding us of the importance of honor, justice, and the pursuit of truth..

Senior Warden Conrad Watson, equipped with a Master's Degree and an unwavering composure, impressively facilitated the advancement/passing of four Brothers to the rank of Fellow Craft in a single evening during May. With remarkable precision, he flawlessly delivered the lecture and conducted the obligation for each of the four candidates. His hard work and dedication, makes him truly deserving of the Lion of the Lodge award. He has significantly lifted up the lodge and is well on his way to becoming the 2024 Worshipful Master of the Lodge.

The legend of the lion's rebirth was prominent in Medieval symbology, where it was founded on the belief that a lion cub was born stillborn but could only be revived by the roaring of its sire. This belief gave rise to the lion becoming a symbol of rebirth and regeneration.
In Freemasonry, the lion's rebirth is often used as a symbol of reformation and refreshment. The lion represents strength and courage, while its rebirth represents the transformation and renewal of the individual.
For our purposes, the Master's Pin of Lion of the Lodge, can be viewed as a symbol for one that serves to lift up the lodge to make it better than it was before his action.
The Master intends to bestow this pin only once to each Brother, with the hope that as many Brothers as possible will receive it. Imagine the joy of seeing every Brother proudly wearing this pin, recognizing that each of us can make a positive impact.

Widows Update and Announcements
We come together with love and prayers for Norma, one of our widows who recently suffered a fall, resulting in a forehead injury from hitting the corner of her dishwasher. Thankfully, after receiving 18 stitches, she is expected to recover well. As a gesture of support, we are planning to gift her with Harry Potter glasses to bring some cheer and a touch of magic to her healing journey.
In another somber note, we have sadly lost a cherished member of our community, Pat Ransom, who was a beloved local widow. Details regarding the services to honor her life will likely be available on Saturday, June 10th. I will strive to provide more information during our upcoming Stated Meeting.
During our June Stated meeting, we will have the honor of presenting Mary Jo Handle with her long-awaited Widow's pin, which was delayed due to the challenges posed by the Covid pandemic.
Additionally, in the coming fall, we will repeat this special recognition for Barbara Schnepp, who is currently away visiting her grandchildren.
Looking ahead, as Covid conditions permit, I am hopeful that we can organize a "widow's luncheon" in the fall. This gathering will provide an opportunity for our widows to come together, share support, and enjoy each other's company, fostering a sense of community and care.
Let us continue to extend our love, prayers, and support to those in need and celebrate the resilience of our community.
With heartfelt regards,
Respectfully,
Doug Kelley

Eastern Star Chapter Update
Dear Members and Supporters of Eastern Star,
We are thrilled to highlight one of the incredible charities supported by Eastern Star, Paws for Purple Hearts. This remarkable organization provides assistance dogs to veterans grappling with mobility issues and PTSD. To contribute to this noble cause, our Chapter will once again be selling chocolate bones. Every dollar from the sales will be directed towards supporting this charity. You can find these delectable treats available for purchase at each Stated Meeting.
Additionally, we are excited to announce that the Eastern Star ladies have graciously organized a series of engaging "after-dinner" events. While the gentlemen are attending the Lodge, these events will take place during the "even" months of this year, specifically in June, August, October, and December. These sessions will encompass discussions and classes, providing a wonderful opportunity for further enrichment.
Our ongoing project to create blankets for Project Linus and the Young Survivors Coalition is progressing admirably. The best part is that no specific skills are required to participate! Even a Past Master like myself can contribute. We invite you to peruse our flyer for more details. Our next "party" will take place on Thursday, June 15th, from 5 PM to 9 PM. Feel free to drop in at any time and depart as your schedule permits. Everyone and anyone is welcome to lend a helping hand.
Lastly, we wish to emphasize that Eastern Star is an organization designed for Masons, their wives, and other female relations. We wholeheartedly encourage more men to become involved in Eastern Star. It is important to note that you do not need to join alongside your spouse. If you have any questions or would like more information, please do not hesitate to reach out to me at any time.
Let us continue to make a positive impact through Eastern Star.
Warm regards,
Doug Kelley (Worthy Patron)
Dear DeMolay Members and Supporters,
We had a fantastic time at our recent meeting in Old West. Although we could use some assistance, the atmosphere was vibrant as we engaged in an exciting fencing lesson led by Trevor Shepard, the talented son of Brother Scott Shepard, who is also a Senior DeMolay. I must admit, I endured my fair share of "stabbing," but it was all in good fun!
Our next event promises to be equally thrilling. On Sunday, June 4th at 1:30 PM, we will gather for a Rifle/Pistol shooting session at "Place to Shoot." The cost is $20 per person, and I want to emphasize that you do not need to bring your own firearm. Brother Scott, a certified instructor, will be there to guide us on safety protocols and provide easy-to-use firearms for loan.
Now that the "Membership Class" has concluded, we are excited to commence the "Proficiency Class" on the fourth Fridays. During this session, our young men will have the opportunity to memorize their obligations, similar to our esteemed Masonic counterparts. And yes, we will sweeten the deal with pizza as a token of appreciation!
However, it is important to address a challenge we are currently facing. Old West DeMolay is in need of support. We convene on the second and fourth Fridays of each month, but we require more active advisors and are grappling with a low membership count. This is where you come in. We implore you to step up and assist us in recruiting new members for our chapter. Additionally, we invite you to consider becoming a DeMolay Advisor ("DAD"), as we welcome the participation of both fathers and mothers!
Let us work together to breathe new life into Old West
DeMolay.
Warm regards,
Doug Kelley (Advisor)
