Greetings from the East,
As we continue to finish the recovery from the restrictive years of Covid, let us continue to join in harmony to build a better tomorrow. ~ Old West Master, 2023
Dear Brethren,
It is with great pleasure that I write to you today to highlight some remarkable events and accomplishments within our beloved lodge. June was an eventful month, with the initiation of four worthy candidates who have embraced the values and principles of Freemasonry. Each candidate exemplified the qualities of integrity, compassion, and a genuine desire to pursue the path of enlightenment. These new brethren have joined our esteemed ranks, and it is our duty as Masons to extend our support, guidance, and brotherly love to them. Let us nurture their Masonic journey, helping them grow in wisdom and understanding. The month of June also witnessed the raising of two worthy brethren to the sublime degree of Master Mason. While this achievement marks a significant juncture, it also signifies the commencement of their transformative journey ahead.
Additionally, as we approach the festive July 4th celebrations, we are eagerly preparing for our participation in the parade, along with other notable engagements, such as the Masonic Homes and outreach services presentation. Lastly, it is an extraordinary milestone as we present the prestigious 50-year Golden Veteran Award to our esteemed Brother Michael Cain.
As Freemasons, we proudly uphold our principles and traditions. This year's July 4th parade presents an opportunity for us to demonstrate our commitment to the community. We shall march with dignity, adorned in our regalia, and display the Masonic symbols that reflect our values of unity, freedom, and service to humanity. By participating in this parade, we aim to spread awareness of our noble fraternity and inspire others to pursue the noble path of Masonry.
Our dedication to service extends beyond our lodge walls. In the spirit of compassion and charity, we will have organized a presentation on Masonic Homes and outreach services. This presentation will enlighten us about the various initiatives undertaken by our fraternity to provide assistance, care, and support to those in need. By engaging in such activities, we reaffirm our commitment to helping others and positively impacting the lives of individuals and families within our community.
It is an extraordinary privilege to announce the conferral of the 50-year Golden Veteran Award to our esteemed Brother Michael Cain. This distinguished honor recognizes his unwavering commitment, dedication, and service to the craft over the past five decades. Brother Michael Cain has exemplified the highest ideals of Freemasonry, consistently exhibiting brotherly love, relief, and truth throughout his Masonic journey. Let us join together in a special ceremony to express our profound gratitude and celebrate Brother Michael Cain's remarkable milestone.
Brethren, as we reflect upon the achievements of June and eagerly anticipate the upcoming engagements, let us remember the fundamental principles that unite us as Freemasons. May our bonds of brotherhood strengthen as we support the newly initiated brethren, proudly march in the July 4th parade, engage in charitable endeavors, and honor Brother Michael Cain with the Golden Veteran Award. Together, let us continue to uphold the tenets of Freemasonry and make a positive impact on the lives of others.
Let us continue to work together in harmony towards a brighter future for our lodge and our community.
Fraternally yours,
Michael Schneider, PM

Dear Brethren,
In Freemasonry, the Senior Warden represents the concept of the "Pillar of Strength" which represents a fundamental principle that underpins the teachings and values of the fraternity. The Pillar of Strength symbolizes the moral and spiritual foundation upon which Freemasonry is built, providing support and guidance to its members in their personal and Masonic endeavors.
The Pillar of Strength is often associated with the architectural symbolism found within Freemasonry, drawing inspiration from the pillars that adorned ancient temples and structures. These pillars, such as the famous columns of Boaz and Jachin in Solomon's Temple, represent stability, wisdom, and harmony.
Within the context of Freemasonry, the Pillar of Strength encompasses several key aspects:
Overall, the Pillar of Strength in Freemasonry serves as a guiding principle, reminding members of their responsibility to uphold moral virtue, seek knowledge, foster unity, and serve others. It represents the foundation upon which Freemasonry is built and the qualities that Freemasons strive to embody in their daily lives. By embracing the Pillar of Strength, Freemasons aim to become pillars of support, wisdom, and moral fortitude, making a meaningful difference in the world.
Thank you for your attention, and may your journey through Freemasonry be a pillar of strength.
Fraternally,
Conrad Watson
Senior Warden

My esteemed brethren,
I recently had the opportunity to sing during one of our masonic ceremonies at Old West Lodge. It brought great joy to my heart and I am told that it brought joy to the brothers listening as well. Music holds a significant place within Freemasonry, as it transcends language and touches the depths of the soul. Symbolism and ritual go hand in hand, with carefully selected music enhancing the experience and creating a reverent atmosphere. Masonic music inspires reflection and personal transformation, evoking introspection and contemplation. Music acts as a binding force, fostering unity and connecting Freemasons on a spiritual and emotional level. Masonic odes and hymns serve as reminders of shared values, evoking pride and loyalty. Music in Freemasonry strengthens bonds, reinforces moral virtue, and enriches the Masonic journey.
I am also happy that Brother David Lalimar has been enriching our Masonic experience by playing Music during our meetings and ceremonies. Music occupies a unique and profound place within Freemasonry, transcending boundaries and resonating with the fraternity's rich symbolism and moral teachings. It serves as a vehicle for unity, enlightenment, and personal reflection, strengthening the bonds among Freemasons and reinforcing their commitment to moral virtue. As Freemasonry continues to evolve, music remains an ever-present thread, weaving together the diverse tapestry of the fraternity's rituals, ceremonies, and shared experiences, ultimately enriching the journey of every Mason who walks the path.
Together, we are the pillar of beauty!
Fraternal greetings from the South,
Ronald Gutierrez, PM

A Special Lodge Presentation: Masonic Homes of California and Outreach Services
A Masonic Outreach Services representative will give us a short presentation, immediately following July 11th Stated dinner, about the benefits available to Masons and their families in need of relief.
~
California Masons dedicated the first Masonic Home in Union City in 1898. Created to shelter widows and children left destitute and alone, it was our state fraternity’s first major, tangible testament to the Masonic ideals of brotherly love and relief. Since then, the Masonic Homes of California has expanded into a robust, statewide network of critical resources and services for our members. Through compassionate care, the Masonic Homes pledges to keep Masonic family members of all ages, throughout California, safe, healthy, and connected. The speaker will provide information and answer questions about the various programs that exist to provide relief for brethren in need: the Masonic Assistance telephone line, the Masonic Homes at Union City and Covina, Masonic Senior Outreach Services, Masonic Family Outreach Services, Masonic Center for Youth and Families, Shared Housing, and Lodge Outreach.

Greetings, brethren and seekers of wisdom! In the realm of speculative fiction, there is a timeless saga that has captivated the imaginations of millions: Star Trek. Its futuristic setting, exploration of the human condition, and profound themes of unity and progress have resonated with fans around the globe. Yet, hidden within the depths of this beloved science fiction franchise lies a remarkable connection to the ancient and honorable institution of Freemasonry.
In this article, we shall embark upon a journey to unveil the ties that bind these two seemingly disparate worlds.
At first glance, Freemasonry and Star Trek may appear to be unrelated, separated by the expanse of time and space. However, upon closer inspection, one can discern profound similarities that transcend these boundaries. Both Freemasonry and Star Trek embrace fundamental principles that advocate for the betterment of humanity, the quest for knowledge, and the pursuit of harmony and understanding among all peoples.
Freemasonry, with its rich history dating back centuries, is founded upon the principles of brotherly love, relief, and truth. Through rituals, symbols, and allegories, Freemasons seek to improve themselves and contribute positively to their communities. Similarly, Star Trek envisions a future where humanity has transcended divisions, embracing a united vision of exploration, cooperation, and tolerance. The Federation, a governing body in the Star Trek universe, embodies the principles of egalitarianism, diversity, and the pursuit of knowledge.
It is within these shared ideals that the relationship between Freemasonry and Star Trek becomes apparent. Both institutions advocate for the moral and intellectual advancement of humankind, emphasizing the importance of education, personal growth, and the development of virtues. Freemasonry's emphasis on self-improvement aligns with Star Trek's portrayal of individuals constantly seeking to better themselves and the world around them.
Moreover, the symbolism employed in Freemasonry resonates with the themes and motifs found in Star Trek. Freemasonry utilizes symbols such as the square and compass, the pillars, and the working tools to convey profound truths and lessons. In a similar vein, Star Trek employs symbols such as the Starfleet insignia, the Prime Directive, and the iconic Vulcan hand salute to represent ideals such as honor, exploration, and logical reasoning.
Furthermore, the universal brotherhood promoted by Freemasonry is echoed in Star Trek's portrayal of a diverse and inclusive future. In the Star Trek universe, beings from various species and cultures work together harmoniously, transcending their differences for the greater good. This vision of unity and cooperation aligns with Freemasonry's core principle of brotherly love, where individuals from all walks of life come together as equals, regardless of their backgrounds or beliefs.
While the connection between Freemasonry and Star Trek may not be explicit or intentional, the philosophical and moral underpinnings shared by these two entities are undeniable. Both embrace the timeless pursuit of enlightenment, the celebration of diversity, and the hope for a brighter future for all humanity.
As Freemasons and Star Trek enthusiasts, let us recognize the parallels between these two worlds. Let us draw inspiration from the noble principles they embody and seek to incorporate them into our lives, both within and beyond the Lodge room. By doing so, we can strive to create a world that reflects the virtues of Freemasonry and the visionary ideals of Star Trek.
In conclusion, brethren, as we explore the realms of science fiction and delve into the ancient traditions of Freemasonry, we uncover an interstellar connection that bridges time, space, and imagination. Let us remember that the values of unity, progress, and brotherly love are not confined to the pages of a book or the frames of a screen but are principles that can guide us on our journey toward enlightenment and a brighter future for all.
Live long and prosper,

In honoring this commitment, we reflect on a touching tale of brotherly love and compassion that unfolded in the wake of our dear brother JIm Bakman's departure.
In the midst of our grief, one Masonic brother, Robert Petrovit, stepped forward to ensure that his fallen comrade's final journey was met with dignity and respect. He took it upon himself to oversee the funeral arrangements, paying meticulous attention to every detail, for he knew that even in death, we must honor the virtues and principles that bind us together.
With great care, he reached out to the family of our departed brother, offering solace and assistance during their time of bereavement. He ensured that their wishes were met and supported them in making the necessary decisions, shouldering the weight of their grief alongside his own. His compassion and dedication, makes him truly deserving of the Lion of the Lodge award. He has significantly lifted up the lodge.
The Lion has long been a symbol of strength and sovereignty, of courage and bravery, and of agility and dignity.

The legend of the lion's rebirth was prominent in Medieval symbology, where it was founded on the belief that a lion cub was born stillborn but could only be revived by the roaring of its sire. This belief gave rise to the lion becoming a symbol of rebirth and regeneration.
In Freemasonry, the lion's rebirth is often used as a symbol of reformation and refreshment. The lion represents strength and courage, while its rebirth represents the transformation and renewal of the individual.
For our purposes, the Master's Pin of Lion of the Lodge, can be viewed as a symbol for one that serves to lift up the lodge to make it better than it was before his action.
The Master intends to bestow this pin only once to each Brother, with the hope that as many Brothers as possible will receive it. Imagine the joy of seeing every Brother proudly wearing this pin, recognizing that each of us can make a positive impact.

Norma Shannon Rest in Peace
It is with a heavy heart that last night I was forced to say goodbye to a truly extraordinary soul. Norma Shannon touched the lives of so many, including mine.
Despite being blind her entire life, she had the uncanny ability to perceive and appreciate things that most of us with sight took for granted. Her other senses were heightened in remarkable ways which allowed her to notice the subtle beauties of the world around us, which always freaked me out! Her unique perspective forever changed the way I “view” life.
Her unwavering faith in God played a significant role in guiding her through life’s obstacles.
Beyond her extraordinary qualities Norma was also a source of endless joy and laughter. Her smile could light up the darkest of rooms, and her laughter was contagious.
My Granny used to say that the hardest part of growing old is losing friends. Losing parents and friends of our parents is the natural part of life, but losing your own friends is really difficult. Today I understand the weight of those words.
I find solace in the memories we shared, the laughter we exchanged, and the love that will forever reside in my heart.
Norma, thank you for being an incredible friend, a source of inspiration, and a constant reminder of the beauty that exists in the world. May you find eternal peace in the loving embrace of our Creator. Rest in peace dear friend.

Eastern Star Report
Dear Members and Supporters of Eastern Star,
One of the Eastern Star charities is Paws for Purple Hearts, which provides assistance dogs for veterans with mobility issues and PTSD. Our Chapter is once again selling chocolate bones for the cause. All proceeds go to this charity. Bags are a $1 each. I will try to have some at each Stated Meeting.
Everyone is invited to our Block Party on Thursday August 3! FREE! Please see the flyer or ask me about it. Lots of food and games and prizes!
The Eastern Star ladies have agreed to put on a series of "after dinner" events - after Stated Meeting dinner, while us guys are in the Lodge, they will have disccussions and classes. This will be on the "even" months this year. The next one will be at the August 1 Stated Meeting, and it will be a card-making demo by my wife Laura.
Our project to make blankets for Project Linus and Young Survivors Coalition is continuing. These are really simple, no skills required - even a Past Master (me) can do them! Please check out our flyer. Our next "party" is Saturday July 15 from 9:00AM to 3:00PM. Drop in anytime, leave when you have to. Anyone and everyone is invited to help.
Eastern Star is an organization for MASONS and their wives, and other female relations. We could certainly use more men in the Eastern Star (you do not need to join with your wife), please talk to me anytime.

Dear DeMolay Members and Supporters,
Old West is meeting, but we could use help. We do plan to be at the July 4 Parade.
One piece of GOOD news is that we will be initiating Kevin McHorney's son Morgan into the Chapter, but we always need new members!
Our next fun event will be July 15 - we are planning a "fun trip" to Six Flags or (if the weather gets warm enough) Castaic Lake.
We have started a "pizza and proficencys" on fourth Fridays, where the young men can memorize their obligations (like the Masons have to). And of course we're bribing them with pizza.
Old West DeMolay is struggling. We meet on the second and fourth Fridays of each month, but we need more active advisors, and we have just a few members. We really need YOU to step up and help find new members for our chapter, as well as volunteering to become an Demolay ADvisor ("DAD" - but "Mom"s are welcome too!)

Let us work together to breathe new life into Old West
